Today we are going to discuss passwords, again.
There was an article released by NordPass (our preferred password manager) of the top 10 passwords that were used in 2024.
1) 123456
2) 123456789
3) 12345678
4) password
5) qwerty123
6) qwerty1
7) 111111
8) 12345
9) secret
10) 123123
Do any of those look familiar? If so, FOR SHAME! Yes, we are shaming you. Mainly because we have discussed password hygiene in the past. We will touch on that again in a second. But first, weak or browser saved passwords are a hackers dream! Not only can they be guessed or cracked easily, WHEN they do get into your computer, if the passwords are saved in the browser, they now have them as well.
Password Hygiene and What You Can Do:
Make sure you use unique passwords. Don’t use the same password for all of your accounts (if one is compromised, you just lost control of all of them)
Use long passwords. We use 20 characters or longer on websites that allow it. We recommend the same thing.
Use multiple special characters !,@,#,$,% etc. in your passwords.
“I will never remember them” you say, our next point. Use a password manager, like NordPass. Password managers store the passwords securely, autofill (so you do not need to copy and past) and they help to create massive and secure passwords that are different across all accounts. Hmm, checks the boxes maybe?
Another great thing to start using (again, we use it) is MFA, or Multi-Factor Authentication. This is a second step in getting into your account. Yes, at first it can bite big time. It is another step you need to take. Think of it this way, it is another step a hacker needs to take as well. If you have the MFA enabled, they also need to figure out how to get their hands on that second device!
