FBI AI Trouble

Let’s talk about AI. I know, a new hot topic. Right? I did an article a few months ago, but today is talking about Deepfakes.

The FBI has issued a warning about criminals using generative AI tech to trick individuals.

What is a deepfake? A deepfake is AI-generated content that can impersonate real people. This is to include voices, images, and even videos!

This is a huge problem, as you may have guessed as the audio clips might sound like a loved one in need of help with a money problem. There are many other ways these criminals have utilized this AI.

Here are a few:

  1. Voice Cloning
  2. Real-time Video Calls
  3. Social Engineering
  4. AI-Generated Videos
  5. Fake IDs
  6. faking Voices for Voice Recognition Systems
  7. Exploiting Crisis Situations

I hope that brings some concern to your mind, and you will be cautious in your dealings with “people”.

Here are some things you can do to protect yourself:

  • Make sure your personal presence is reduced online
  • stop putting personal information out on social media
  • invest in data removal services
  • Google has a free one
  • Don’t share sensitive information
  • Make sure you are skeptical on new “connections” in social media, they may be AI Bots looking to get you into their “network”
  • Update all of your social media privacy settings
  • Verify Callers
  • listen for imperfections in the voice
  • create a secret phrase that can be used if you or your friend are in trouble (for real)
  • In videos and photographs
  • look for the imperfections
  • if you create them, add a watermark?

Some of the other ways we have been over before, but here they are for your review:

  • Backup your data
  • Use 2FA
  • Monitor your accounts
  • Uses strong passwords that are different on every account (a password manager is great for this)
  • DON’T click on links or download files from non-vetted sources.

REPORT any of the activities that are listed above to the FBI. They have an Internet Crime Complaint Center that handles this kind of thing. Your reports are very important, as bulletins and other warnings can be put out, just like the one that led to this email.
